Remember this bit from the New York Times
On Obama…
“His triumph was decisive and sweeping, because he saw what is wrong with this country: the utter failure of government to protect its citizens. He offered a government that does not try to solve every problem but will do those things beyond the power of individual citizens: to regulate the economy fairly, keep the air clean and the food safe, ensure that the sick have access to health care, and educate children to compete in a globalized world.”
I feel like for as long as I can remember, America’s forgotten that this isn’t too much to ask from government, while it’s precisely what we, a people who are presumably represented by our government, should demand of it. It feels, for the first time in my life like our government might be our government. For a moment I’m ready to set aside my differences with America: I’m looking forward to seeing our nation’s priorities and values set straight. I’m looking forward to calling Barack Obama “President.” I feel proud, right now, of my country.
