Something about good art I read
On a plane from New York to Washington, DC, en route to New Mexico, I read the transcript of a memorial that Zadie Smith had given for David Foster Wallace in Harper’s and she reported something true that he once said. Something approximately ‘There is something timeless about good art, and it’s not talent, even shimmering talent. Talent is like a pen that works instead of a pen that doesn’t work. The real difference between good art and so-so art is that good art comes from the place where you are able to love, rather than the place where you simply want to be loved.’
